What do leggings listings disclose about their materials?

Published and source-checked September 5, 2026 · Greener Closet editorial review

In a fixed sample of 12 retailer listings, we retrieved complete percentage disclosures for nine, found one ambiguous materials entry, and could not retrieve percentages for two. These are observations about the content we fetched, not a verdict on product safety or the wider leggings market.

One listing was children’s clothing despite passing our product-name exclusions. Product names alone were insufficient to identify an adult-only cohort.

What the review found

  • Nine of 12 listings (75%) exposed named components and percentages totaling 100 in the retrieved source. This does not verify the sewn-in label, trims, finishes or every color.
  • One of 12 (8.3%) was ambiguous: Gymshark’s retrieved page says “91 Nylon, 9% Elastane,” while our saved record says 88% nylon and 12% elastane. The missing percent sign and changed values need clarification.
  • Two of 12 (16.7%) did not expose percentages in the retrieved content: Alo and Halara. Browser rendering could reveal additional information; we did not classify these as missing retailer disclosures.
  • Complete composition is not complete product evidence. Baleaf’s retrieved page contained conflicting inseam text; MATE’s color selection and Monica + Andy’s pattern variant were not verified. Retailer chemical and biodegradation claims were not independently tested.

The 12 source records

The order follows the sampling rule, not a recommendation or score. Source links are direct retailer links without affiliate tracking. Stored composition and current wording remain separate so differences stay visible.

  1. Not Basics: Organic Cotton Leggings

    Stored catalog composition
    5% Elastane; 95% Organic Cotton
    Retrieved retailer wording
95% OCS certified organic cotton; 5% elastane

  2. Alo: Airbrush High-Waist Heart Throb Legging

    Percentages not retrieved

    Stored catalog composition

    Retrieved retailer wording
Not retrieved; actual disclosure availability remains unknown.

    89% TENCEL Lyocell; 11% CREORA

Method, scope and limitations

From the 179-record activewear catalog snapshot, sort by record ID ascending, retain source paths containing /products/, exclude product names matching baby, kid, kids, child, children, toddler or infant, then take the first record for each distinct case-insensitive brand until 12. Selection was fixed before fetching; unavailable disclosures were not replaced.

We fetched each saved source URL and, where available, its public product JSON on September 5, 2026. An editorial pass compared the named product and materials text with the stored record. “Complete” means the retrieved product section names components with explicit percentages totaling 100; it does not mean the listing or garment is independently certified. A successful HTTP response alone did not count as complete.

Convenience sample, not a market census or a brand ranking. One source URL per brand; variants and size availability were not fully verified. HTTP retrieval and editorial text review only, not browser or physical-product testing. No independent certificate verification, chemical testing, medical review or affiliate ranking.

The initial 179 records were catalog entries, not 179 unique adult styles. This final sample has 12 distinct brand labels and source URLs, including one children’s item. Its selection favors older stored records, recognizable product URL structures and brands already in our catalog. It cannot estimate market-wide disclosure rates.

Our review did not verify laboratory reports, certificate databases, environmental claims or wear performance. We do not infer PFAS presence or absence from a fiber label. See the scoring methodology and its limits and the guide to checking PFAS statements.

For the labeling distinction, see the FTC textile labeling guide. To report a changed source or request a correction, contact Greener Closet with the product URL and date. Revisions will retain a dated record instead of silently changing this snapshot.
