Fabric checker: see what clothes are made of
Check any piece of clothing before you buy it. Paste a product link or type the fabric label, and see the fiber blend, how much of it is plastic, and a score out of 100.
What the checker shows you
- The fiber blend. Each fiber and its percentage, as the retailer or the label lists it.
- How much is plastic. The share of polyester, nylon, acrylic, elastane and other synthetics that shed microplastics.
- A score out of 100. Higher means fewer fibers that shed plastic, linger for decades or often carry chemical finishes.
- Coatings and linings. A polyurethane coating or a full lining the listing names counts as part of the fabric.
Scores come from the fibers a listing or label discloses, scored the same way across the site. Nothing is lab-tested. See how the score works.

Fabric checker questions
What is a fabric checker?
A fabric checker tells you what a piece of clothing is made of. Greener Closet's checker reads the fiber blend from a product link or a fabric label you type in, shows each fiber's percentage and how much of it is synthetic, and gives the blend a score out of 100.
How do I check what fabric a piece of clothing is made of before I buy it?
Copy the link to the product page and paste it into the checker on this page. We read the composition the retailer lists and score it, usually in under 30 seconds. If the listing doesn't say what it's made of, we tell you that instead of guessing.
Can I check a fabric label from the tag?
Yes. Switch the checker to Fabric label and type what the tag says, like "60% cotton, 40% polyester". You get the same score and synthetic share as a product link, straight away.
Is there a Chrome extension that checks clothing fabric?
Yes. The Greener Closet Chrome extension shows the score on product pages at Lululemon, Patagonia, Allbirds, Everlane, Pact, Bombas, Girlfriend Collective, Vuori, Athleta and tentree. On other clothing sites, click the extension and choose Analyze this page. It works in desktop Google Chrome.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Open this page on your phone, then paste the product link or type the label from the tag. There's no app to install.
Can the fabric checker tell me if clothes have PFAS?
Not for certain. A fiber label lists fibers, not the finishes put on the fabric, so we can't confirm a garment has none. Fibers that often get water- or stain-resistant finishes, like polyester and nylon, carry a penalty in the score. Where we've read what the maker says about PFAS, we show it quoted and dated, but it doesn't change the score.
Is the fabric checker free?
Yes. Checking a link or a label is free, and you don't need an account.
